What’s Happening at CG?

Daily Devotional

Read Matthew 21: 12-13
We begin our journey with Jesus by examining and addressing the issue of justice. When Jesus drove the money lenders out of the temple, He expressed what is sometimes referred to as righteous indignation. This is a reactive emotion of anger over mistreatment, insult, or hatred towards one another. The money changers were taking advantage of people, and doing it under the cover of the Temple — God’s house. Jesus acted in accordance with divine law and a sense of justice and morality. His indignation was anger aroused by something unjust, mean, and unworthy. Jesus’ disgust at what was happening required the necessary action to let those involved know that what they were doing was wrong in the sight of God.
As soon as He cleared the Temple, the very people who were being taken advantage of (the lost, the poor, the marginalized) came to Jesus. This tells us that when we as believer’s stand up for what is right (doing the right thing versus doing things right), we might just see people flocking back to the church. The opposite of evil is justice. Justice for those who are used, abused and mistreated in any way. Jesus teaches us that the world can’t teach morality and justice. We (believers) must teach, and lead the world in what is good, right and just according to the model given to us by Jesus.
Heavenly Father, help us to have the courage, wisdom and knowledge to stand whenever we see injustice happening in our lives and in the world. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” (Martin Luther King Jr.)

Suspension of in-person worship services and gatherings extended through April 30, 2020.

Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett and the North Alabama Cabinet have extended the date for suspension of in-person worship services and gatherings through April 30, 2020, to be in compliance with Alabama Governor Kay Ivey’s Stay at Home order issued on the afternoon of April 3rd, and current federal guidelines.

“I am proud of how our congregations have adapted their ministries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their creativity, innovation and commitment inspire me,” Bishop Wallace-Padgett says. “I encourage all our North Alabama congregations to continue as they have been over the last few weeks and put the safety of people first, especially those in high-risk categories. Though we miss gathering together, especially at the time of Holy Week and Easter, we continue to be a witness to our world through this sacrificial care for others.”

The Stay at Home Order does allow some specific exceptions for religious services, such as weddings and funerals. The Order states that any religious event must involve “fewer than 10 people and the people maintain a consistent six foot distance from one another.”

There is also an exception for “drive-in” worship services. They must adhere to the following rules:
1. All participants shall remain in their vehicles for the entirety of the service;
2. The participants in each vehicle all share the same place of residence; and
3. Participants do not come within six feet of participants in other vehicles.

The Bishop and Cabinet are continuing to monitor the situation and encourage all congregations to follow the restrictions laid out by their local public health officials, the State of Alabama and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
