The Book of Acts

Chapter 6

Daily Devotional

Read: 1 Samuel 17: 38-40
I put on my father’s sweater, shoes and hat one day because in my eyes he was the greatest. He was big, strong and could do almost anything. I thought that if I put on his clothes, I’d be just like him. But as I walked around, I tripped because the shoes were too big, the hat covered my eyes and the sweater draped on me like a blanket. I fell and in anger blamed the clothes for the knot on my head. The clothes weren’t the problem, they didn’t fit me because they weren’t mine. Sometimes we look at what others have and want it for ourselves. Maybe, we see their singing talent, speaking ability, or some physical attribute and declare that our lives would be better if we only had what they have. If only I was taller, faster, smarter. If I had this or that or… you get the meaning.
David learns when he tried on Saul’s armor that it was perfect for Saul, but not so good for David. But when he took the armor off, he took his weapon a slingshot, five smooth stones and went on to defeat the giant Goliath with just one shot! Each one of us has gifts that are given by God peculiar to ourselves, and we discover when we use them, we can defeat the giants in our lives. Although other gifts and graces may look good to us, when we try to live in them, we trip, fall and endanger ourselves. The truth is that what we have from God is more than enough and perfectly fitted for us.
Heavenly Father, we are grateful for the awesome gifts that you have given us to be used for your glory. May we be brave like David as we confront our giants knowing that in your strength and power, we will gain the victory.
Shalom
Pastor Smith
