What was the Central Alabama Conference? The Central Alabama Conference was founded in 1876 when African American congregations in Alabama were segregated from White congregations in the denomination. The word “central” referred not to a region of the state but was a term used for African American conferences. The segregation of African Americans into their own conference continued in Alabama until 1972 when it was eliminated because of the formation of The United Methodist Church. Many people refer to this time in the denomination’s history as “merger.” At the time of merger, the Central Alabama Conference had approximately 16,000 members and 130 churches that became a part of the North Alabama Conference and the Alabama-West Florida Conference.
Although we stand 50 years after the elimination of this racist and oppressive structure of the church, we carry the legacy and hope of our fore-parents, who dreamed of a church where all God’s people are not only welcomed but have a seat at the table. Let us never forget the voices of the laity, pastors, district superintendents, and bishops of the Central Alabama Conference who worked diligently to ensure the church would continue from one generation to the next.
To learn more about the Central Alabama Conference, take a moment to read “The Growth and Development of the Central Alabama Conference,” written by The Rev. Charles L. Hutchinson, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Birmingham, Alabama, in 1976.
