Daily Devotional

Read: Hebrews 12:1-2
Watching the news, reading about the cases, deaths and forecast that is expected from the COVID-19 coronavirus makes you think about your mortality. Until I remembered that our ancestors were confronted with some pretty overwhelming challenges. Slavery, life after reconstruction, terrorist bombings, Jim Crow, segregation, voting rights, and Civil Rights all remind me that it wasn’t easy, and we didn’t get here on our own. They sacrificed everything, even their lives so that we can have what we enjoy today. We remember that we are standing on the shoulders of giants who endured worst things than COVID-19 and lived to pass life on to the next generation.
The author in Hebrews is writing to people who felt like giving up. They had lost hope, became spiritually lazy, negligent and were about to compromise their faith and beliefs. But, the writer sends a prophetic jolt into the community to get them back in the race. Our ancestors today are surrounding us, cheering us on and calling us to remember that we are the best of the best. This virus is a weight that must be laid aside as we take our eyes off ourselves, fix them on Jesus and open our faith files to read and remember all of the times that God has brought us through.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the testimony of our elders and ancestors. Today, we resolve that we will not flinch in the face of trials and tribulations because we stand on the shoulders of those who would not let up, give up, or shut up, until they paid up, prayed up, and stayed up.
Shalom
Pastor Smith
