What’s Happening at CG?

A Note From Pastor Cowser

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
-Philippians 4:4-6 (NRSV)-
In this passage, I believe that the Apostle Paul gives us a great formula on how to “pray the right way.” I always find it interesting that when we encounter people experiencing difficult times in their lives, typically we advise them to: “Just pray about it.” Have you ever heard that before? Better yet, have you ever told someone that yourself? I know I am guilty. Please do not get me wrong, I do think we should pray about all things, but Paul did not instruct us to pray first, but he encouraged us to rejoice first.
I believe that Paul gives us some great advice because, oftentimes, when we pray we pray from a place of worry and fear. Simply put, Paul reminds us that there is always something to rejoice about in our lives. The very fact that we are alive and breathing right now is evidence of the goodness of God at work in our lives. So, I encourage you to stop whatever you are doing right now and thank God for everything that comes to your mind. I believe when we rejoice and give thanks in our lives we quickly realize that God is in control. It is then we begin to pray prayers that honor God and give us the strength to face anything in life. We will move from “woe-is-me” type of prayers and begin to focus on the things that really matter. It is in our rejoicing that we realize that we are not alone and that God is near.
Blessings,
Pastor Cowser
