What’s Happening at CG?

“I Know Who Holds My Hand”
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths for righteousness For His name’s sake.
-Psalm 23:1-3 (NKJV)-
I have come to love a hymn that the choir of my childhood church would sing many years ago, “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” In the refrain of this hymn, Ira F. Stanphill writes: “Many things about tomorrow, I don’t seem to understand; But I know who holds tomorrow, and I know who holds my hand.” When I was younger, I thought it was so strange that they were singing about “not knowing about tomorrow.” Simply put, I had no clue as to what it all meant. Needless to say, now that I’ve grown older and have had a few life experiences of my own, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt what they were singing about.
Life is unpredictable. One minute things can be good in our world and the next minute things can be falling apart. There is comfort in knowing that although we do not know what the future may bring, we have a Shepherd, our Heavenly Father, who will lead the way. In the 23rd Psalm, David gives us a beautiful image of God as Shepherd. He reminds us that the Shepherd will guide us to places where all of our needs will be met. However, we must be willing to let go of our control and allow the Shepherd to work in our life.
There’s a story told of a young boy and his father on their way home one night. The boy was in the passenger’s seat talking non-stop and all of a sudden, he fell silent as they turned a corner down a dark street. The father realizing his son might be frightened by the darkness turned and asked: “Son, are you okay?” And the boy just sat there still not saying a word. The father asked again: “Are you okay? Do you know where you are?” Finally, the boy replied: “I’m okay, because as long as you know where we are, I know that everything will be alright!”
This is the way we should be in our relationship with God. No matter how dark the road may seem, or how many bends, curves, ups, and downs we experience on our journey, we must remember the Shepherd knows the way. He will lead us to green pastures and still waters.
Blessings,
Pastor Cowser
