What’s Happening at CG 2/2/2022

A Note From Our Pastor
Center Grove Family & Friends:

As we begin Black History Month 2022, let us remember that the celebration of Black History is too remarkable to be confined to just one month each year. We should celebrate Black History, Black Lives, and Black Excellence at all times and in all places. I remember my childhood and hearing the stories of generations past and never did I imagine that those stories would inspire me throughout my life. We each can testify to strong women and men from our past who persevered in spite of the challenges and evils that they faced in life. I believe the key to a brighter future for us as a people today can be found in drawing from the deep well of our beautiful, but yet complex past as a people.

During this Black History, I invite you to join me in remembering where we have come from. Your story is important! My story is important! Our story is important! Maybe it’s time to pull out all those family photos and remember what God has done. I leave you with these words from the third stanza of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” written by James Weldon Johnson. Johnson shapes the words in the third stanza of the poem in the form of a prayer and I encourage you to pray these words as you reflect upon and remember your story:

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee;
Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;
Shadowed beneath thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.
(*The United Methodist Hymnal, p. 519)

Never forget!
